ComLeads by Example

In light of last week’s Ugly Sweaters Give Back post, and with the holidays just around the corner, ’tis the season of service and giving back.

Service-learning: Put the two words together and you get a snapshot of what happens when you combine them. Service-learning is a way for students to get involved in their communities by making a positive impact, all while applying the concepts they’re learning in class.

Let’s take a look at the projects Comlead students we’re involved in this semester in Dr. Hartman’s Leadership class.

1. Wishlist 4 Whiskers – One group created this website for the SPCA of Erie County, which features a donation “Wishlist” of supplies they’re in need of and where people can donate them at Canisius.

  • Students set up bins around the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library at Canisius College during the week of the big winter storm… but don’t worry they extended it and received lots of supplies!
  • Blankets, pillowcases, paper towels, newspaper, and more we’re donated! (Almost everything on SPCA’s wishlist!)

Looks like the animals at our local SPCA will be keeping warm this winter, thanks to this group of students from Comlead.

2. Canisius Give Back Project – Another group started this initiative to benefit the Buffalo City Mission.

  • By reaching out to students at Canisius and Hilbert College along with other family members and friends, this group set a goal to raise $400 to help 200 families in need this holiday season.

3. Access of WNY – Dynamic duo Jerry and Allison, set out to help out this non-profit organization aimed at strengthening the bonds of faith and friendship among the Arab-American community of Lackawanna.

  • Developed a writing workshop to help students sharpen their writing skills
  • Created this video, capturing powerful images of the people from this organization

Comlead students are demonstrating what it means to be a leader in our community, and have learned important concepts in group learning, such as time management, collaboration, and diversity.

These projects aren’t finished even though the semester is nearly over, so if you’re feeling called to give to one them, visit their webpages or contact me at and I’ll put you in touch with the right person.
