Today, Thursday September 17 at 6:00 am Make-a-Wish Western New York Chapter kicked off their 21st Annual 97Rock Radio-thon.  The event will run for 28 consecutive hours, ending at 10:00 am tomorrow, Friday, September 18th. 97 Rock legend, Larry Norton, has been heading this event for 2 decades and stays on air for the entire 28 hours. To date, this annual Radio-thon has raised more than $2.8 million for local Children’s wishes.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Make-a-Wish organization, their goal is to grant the wishes of children who have been diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. To be eligible a child must be between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 years of age and can refer themselves or be referred by medical professionals, parents, legal guardians and family members..

Fact: According to a 2011 wish impact survey, a wish come true empowers children with life-threatening medical conditions to fight harder against their illness.

I have been a volunteer with the Western New York division of Make-a-Wish for just over one year now.  During that time I have witnessed the amazing things that this organization does for not only the children whose wishes they are granting but these children’s families as well. Just recently I went through orientation to become a wish-granter which allows me to actually meet with the wish kids and their families and help coordinate wishes.  Knowing that I can help make a difference in just one child’s life is the most amazing feeling and it is a feeling that everyone who donates either their money or time to this organization experiences.

I have signed up to volunteer for the second year in a row at the Radio-thon. This year I will be working the overnight shift so if any of you are night owls, call in with your donations after midnight.  You can request songs, give donations in honor of a family member or friend, bid on some great auction items or purchase one of our game packages for the Sabres or Bills! I encourage everyone to tune in just for a little bit and see what a difference this organization makes in the lives of so many kids and families.
