The Power of Communication

Posted by on Feb 19, 2016 in ComLead, Organizational Leadership

Last Tuesday, February 9th, three successful alum from the Communication and Leadership program took part in the Organizational Leadership Panel: The Power of Communication. The alum spoke to students about where they are now and how the program helped them get there. To learn more about the panelists, see below.

Nick Heidinger: Nick graduated from the program in 2008 and works for HR at ECMC.

Fun fact– Nick met his wife in the Communication and Leadership program!

Mike Lee: Mike graduated from the program in 2010 and works as the Director of Research and Business Development at Evergreen Association of WNY, Inc.

Cecily Rodriguez: Cecily graduated from the program in 2011 and is the Principal and Founder of her own company, Shift Happens LLC.

Since each panelist’s journey is different they each offered unique advice. Some of the most memorable and helpful points were the following:

  • Everyone has a different communication style and leadership style. The courses in the Communication and Leadership program teach you how to recognize these different styles and how to adapt and change your style in order to communicate and work in the most effective way.
  • Throughout the program and your career journey you will meet new people all the time. It is important to make connections but even more important to keep them.  A simple “Hi, how are you doing?” or “What have you been up to lately?” every once and a while keeps the lines of communication open. You never know what opportunities may arise from these connections.
  • Whether you go straight into graduate school or take some time off in between, all three panelists said that they would not be where they are today or have seen the same level of success if it were not for their degree in the Communication and Leadership program.
