So Many Languages…What’s Yours?

My two-year old daughter is babbling up a storm, but that’s exactly what it is to most people, babble.  We speak Lithuanian with her in the home but everywhere else she hears English and, as our Pediatrician told us, it would take a bit longer for her to sort out how to communicate effectively.  But I seem to understand her just fine; when she prattles away to others, they turn to me and say “huh?” and I quickly translate her desires.  It’s amazing the thousands, dare I say millions, of ways we communicate to one another and words don’t necessarily have to have any bearing on the success of the message.  I’ve worked in executive offices, high school and middle school classrooms, press boxes, locker rooms, and playrooms where I’ve learned that no matter the setting, communicating in a variety of ways is imperative to successful personal and professional relationships.

In my second year of the Communication and Leadership program I will never forget a class I took taught by Dr. Alan Weinstein and Ms. Judi Spear.  They challenged us to reflect upon ourselves, to analyze and understand the way we communicate because only then would we be able to understand others.  We had to journey through our intelligences and share our findings with our classmates opening up a very clear understanding of how our own communication bias’ can affect the messages we send and receive.  Currently I’m a stay-at-home mom and I can clearly see the importance of appreciating my daughters way of communicating with sounds, body movements, gestures, and eye contact; we have avoided many of the tantrums the terrible two’s are notorious for.  Regardless of the environment in which you work, always remember that the messages you send and receive are based on the variety of languages in which you choose to communicate.
