Voting in America

In honor of Election Day and deciding who the next President, and leader, of our country will be, we’re taking a look back at the history of voting as a reminder about why it is so very important that each and every one of us cast our vote today and in every presidential election moving forward.

Let’s start at the beginning:
1790– When the constitution was written, only white male adult property-owners had the right to vote.
1850– By this time property ownership and tax requirements are eliminated and almost all adult white males can vote.
1870– The 15th amendment is passed which gives former slaves the right to vote and protects the voting rights of male citizens of any race.
1890– We take a step backwards and states establish literacy tests which keep most African Americans from being able to vote. The Grandfather Clause is put into effect so that white males are not affected by the literacy tests.
1915– Grandfather clause is ruled in conflict with the 15th amendment and literacy tests are outlawed for federal elections.
1920– The 19th amendment is passed and women can vote.
1924– The Indian Citizenship Act grants all Native Americans the rights of citizenship which includes the right to vote in federal elections.
1964– The 24th amendment is passed which bans poll tax for voting in federal elections.
1965– The Voting Rights Act protects the rights of minority voters and eliminates voting barriers.
2003– The Federal Voting Standards and Procedures Act requires states to streamline registration, voting and other election procedures.

This timeline only highlights a few of the important moments in the history of voting but is meant to demonstrate how far we have come as a country and more importantly, how long we have fought in order to make sure ALL Americans have the right to vote. So, go out today and exercise your right to vote, do your civic duty and more importantly do it to thank all of the men and women before you who have fought so hard for you to have this right.1042703_1280x720
