And The Winner Is…

A few weeks back we did a blog on the pitch10 competition being put on by Next Generation United, a group formed through United Way Buffalo & Erie County. For those who may have missed the blog here is a quick recap:

• Pitch10 is a competition where 10 not-for-profit organizations compete for a grand prize of $5,000 to be used to fund a specific program or initiative of the organization. Second and third place winners receive $2,500 each. The catch is that these organizations must be either millennial led or millennial focused (benefiting a millennial target audience). They also had to be incorporated no earlier than July 1, 2010 and have revenues of less than $500,000 annually. Each team had 3 minutes to pitch their idea to attendees to vote for their program.

The event took place at Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Thursday Nov. 10 from 5:30-8:00pm. Out of 23 organizations, 10 qualified to participate. Those organizations are listed below:
• Explore Buffalo
• Big Big Table
• University Heights Tool Library
• Family Promise of WNY
• Clean Air: Organizing for Health & Justice
• Buffalo Game Space
• Seneca Street Development Corp.
• Westminster Economic Development Initiative
• F Bites
• GOBike Buffalo

When all was said and done, Family Promise of WNY took home the grand prize. Family Promise of WNY provides temporary shelter and support to families experiencing homelessness within Western New York. Their winning program promises to provide security deposits for the families they support and to launch a financial literacy program.

The second and third place winners were Big Big Table, who pitched for a pay-as-you-can community café and Explore Buffalo, who is looking to expand its free tours to students at lower-income schools.

Even though there were only 3 winners, every organization brought creative and innovative program ideas to the table.
