Whether it’s at work, in school, or your personal life we have all likely experienced something called a rut. When looking up the definition of rut online two meanings were given:

  1. A long deep track made by the repeated passage of the wheels of vehicles
  2. A habit or pattern of behavior that has become dull and unproductive but is hard to change.

Even though the first definition is quite literal it actually lends itself to the second definition and makes a lot of sense. When we do the same thing over and over again we get stuck on that path and it can be hard to create a new one.

Identifying that we are in a rut is the first step and the easiest but attempting to get out of it can be frustrating and sometimes defeating. Since falling into this situation can happen in any area of life, and is for the most part inevitable, it is good to have strategies that will help us think creatively again, boost positivity, and overall get us back on a productive track.
