United Way Takes Stand for At – Risk Babies

Posted by on Apr 12, 2017 in ComLead

This year United Way of Buffalo and Erie County will hold their eighth Community Baby Shower to help at – risk mothers and their babies. Since the event started back in 2010 they have helped more than 6,000 families. The event was created in response to some harsh statistics including the following:

  • Each week more than 50,000 babies are born in poverty which means they are at a higher risk for health issues due to lack of prenatal care
  • Each week 21 babies are born preterm, 15 at a low birth weight and one that won’t survive its first year

The United Way is working with three wonderful organizations that will receive the donated items and distribute them to the young families they help serve. These organizations are Catholic Charities of buffalo – WIC program, Buffalo Prenatal Perinatal Network, and Jericho Road Community Health Center – Priscilla Project.

Some items these young families find themselves needing include Diapers, wipes, and digital thermometers among many other new baby items. Financial contributions and gift cards are also welcome. Groups can get involved by hosting their own “baby showers” to collect items and then bring them to the United Way Building. Donations can be dropped off through May 12th.

We have a responsibility to help build up our communities and constantly strive to make them stronger. It is so easy to move through the day not noticing what is going on in the world around us. When we are willing and able we can take opportunities like these to make a difference in the lives of our fellow neighbors.
