What is a Giving Day

In light of the second annual Canisius College Giving Day occurring as we speak, we want to take the time to let you know what it is and why it is important. Not just at Canisius but for any organization looking to join the Giving Day trend. Giving days can be held by anyone and are typically online fundraisers that last for about 24 hours and encourage groups of people to donate to a particular cause. The goal is to quickly raise awareness and collect as many donations as possible within those 24 hours.

Technology has become a part of our everyday lives and organizations are now leveraging it to raise money for their respective causes. Giving Days have endless possibilities and provide a wide range of information for those running them. You are able to track donors, raise awareness, increase your visibility, and challenge donors to meet fundraising goals.

Using this online platform also allows for a very transparent fundraising process which can increase donors in and of itself. One of the key ways to persuade individuals is through social proof. As outlined by Dr. Robert Cialdini, this is similar to the “Monkey see, Monkey do” scenario. When we don’t know what to do we look to those around us. In the context of giving day, donors can see who has donated to the organization or a specific program which may prompt them to donate themselves.

Giving Days are important because they allow an easy avenue for donors to give back to organizations, programs, causes that have made an impact on their lives. Here at Canisius, Giving Day allows alumni, students, faculty, etc. to give back to an institution that has already given them so much. This money can then be used to help fund scholarships, provide quality education for future students, help grow programs and initiatives, the list could go on and on.
