January is the month of new beginnings and a fresh start. It is the month of resolutions and change and forcing yourself to get over the slump that comes after the holidays.

While you are more than welcome to form your own healthy lifestyle resolutions, today you should consider some communication resolutions that you can implement into your everyday life. These changes can improve your interpersonal as well as work relationships and will help you establish yourself as an effective communicator.

  1. Make more eye contact! – This is a lot easier said than done but it says a lot about a person when they can maintain proper eye contact throughout a conversation. Especially in interviews!
  2. Be an active listener – Do NOT think about your similar situation the entire time that someone is trying to vent to you. Do not wait for their story to end just so you could share yours without acknowledging theirs. Instead try to really focus on what they are saying and respond appropriately. Let them vent and talk them through their issue before you follow up with your similar situation. It lets people know that they were actually heard.
  3. Initiate conversations – If you lacked the confidence to initiate conversations before then let 2018 be your year to be bold and be engaging whether it be in the break room or class.
  4. Talk through conflicts – Do not resort straight to scolding, frustration, or ignorance. Talk through the situation and what can be done to improve it.
  5. Don’t be afraid to ask more questions – Especially in the workplace! If you are unsure and your worry is keeping you from completing a task then just ask. The results will generally be better when you have clarification anyway.
  6. Don’t rely on technology for communication – While this is a little personal for me, plenty of people fall victim to the habit of emailing someone in the same office as you. Get up and walk to your coworker if you need to speak with them about something. It is faster, healthier, and breaks up your day.

There are plenty of ways that you could strive to improve your communication skills and tactics so here are just a few that you can use to start your 2018 off right.
