Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is a global event that kicks off the true spirit of the holidays – giving! While it is lovely to open presents and cards during the holiday season, it is also wonderful to know that others are doing the same thing. Especially if you consider that many of those others may be less fortunate than ourselves.

As a response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is the virtual (or not) day for charity. So while you use those days to make personal purchases and gifts, use this day to give. Turn your focus (or wallet) towards people who do not have the same luxuries as you do.

“Giving Tuesday connects diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations around the world for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving.” –

So while the magic of the holiday season is here, let that season also bring the power of giving to others. Here are some ways that you can consider donating your time, resources, or money:

  1. Pay It Forward – Buy the next person in line’s coffee, usually this sparks a trend and the system will continue beautifully!
  2. Pick up someone’s check – having worked at a restaurant, it is remarkable the surprise and emotion that comes over a customer’s face when you inform them that another generous customer decided to pay their bill today. It can really mean a lot to people.
  3. Donate old blankets to local animal shelters – This is especially needed in the winter months! Help keep our shelter pets warm this season while they wait out their new forever home.
  4. Send holiday cards – Send a batch to a local nursing home, to our service men and women, to the veteran’s association, to a refugee support service, to the detention center, etc. There are plenty of people in the world that do not have someone to send them love this holiday season.
  5. The major Giving Tuesday idea is to donate online to nonprofit organizations. Many of these organizations may have some sort of reward incentive, and some even have systems that will match every donation.
